29 lac debit cards linked to Hitachi’s switch, came under attack from malware attack last year, Parliament gave this information on Friday.

Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, “It was informed by commercial banks that 29 lac cards used in the ATM connected with Hitachi switches were of malware attack”.

However, only 3,291 cases were reported by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for successful attempts of misuse of cards.

RBI has informed that Hitachi Payment Services (HPS) has appointed SISA Information Security for Professional Certified Investigator Forensic Investigation.

Gangwar said that in the final report it has been suggested that the HPS ATM infrastructure was violated and it was a violation of the incident between May 21 and July 11 last year. But there was no damage to the sales infrastructure.

He further said that the National Payment Corporation has informed that no independent investigation is being conducted by them.

RBI has issued a comprehensive circular on the cyber security framework on 2 June 2016, which includes best practices related to various aspects of cyber security.
